Introduction to machine tools

This class introduces you to the main machine tools used for woodworking. You will learn how to properly adjust and operate the machines with some tips & tricks and essential safety notions.

In order to put these notions to use, each participant will be using these machines to make their own red maple wine case or tool box.

Practical course

  • Presentations and demonstrations by the teacher
  • Technical exercises and making of an object/piece of furniture by the participants

  • Machine and hand sanding
  • Gluing
  • Pilot holes, couter sink and chambered holes for hardware (nails and screws)
  • Finish sanding

  • Materials and tools needed to carry out exercises and/or projects
  • Course notebook
  • If necessary, loan of hearing protectors and safety glasses

Schedule for the Woodworking initiation course

Day 1
  • Presentations, course objectives and project
  • Woodworking fundamentals & workshop safety
  • Presentation, demonstration & practice using radial arm saw, jointer, planer, table saw and miter saw
  • First steps making the project
Day 2
  • Refresher on workshop safety
  • Demonstration and practice milling rabbet joints and the table saw
  • Presentation, demonstration & practice using drill press, band saw and sanding machines (disc sander, edge sander and oscillating sander)
  • Assembly (glue up and nailing) & finishing

Woodworking training programs

Unless otherwise specified, ÉÉAM general public courses are only open to people 18 years of age and older.
