Pattern wood carving

This class introduces you to traditional pattern wood carving. You will learn which wood species are best as well as the tools and safe work techniques to making low relief sculpted patterns (sculptures with an overall shallow depth). You will also learn how to sharpen the various sculpting gouges and tools. To put these notions to use, each participant will create their own composition and sculpt it in pieces of basswood.

Practical course

  • Presentations and demonstrations by the teacher
  • Technical exercises and making of an object/piece of furniture by the participants

Schedule for the pattern carving initiation course

Day 1
  • Presentations, course objectives and project
  • Presentation on wood carving (wood species, tools, drawing and modeling)
  • Appropriate and safe techniques for using the tools and equipment
  • First carving exercise on a piece of basswood
  • Gouge sharpening demonstration
Day 2
  • Low relief composition exercise (sketch)
  • Low relief carving on basswood of each participants own composition
Day 3
  • Low relief carving on basswood of each participants own composition
